4-3-2020 KANHA NAT PARK, INDIA - RICHARDS PIPIT (Anthus richardi)


Richard's Pipit (Anthus richardi) is a large, robust, thrush-like passerine known for its long, stout legs and incredibly long hind claws. It breeds in the grasslands of Central Asia and Siberia, migrating south to spend winters in India and Southeast Asia.

Physical Characteristics

Size: 17 to 20 cm in length, with a wingspan of 29 to 33 cm and a weight ranging from 21 to 40 g.Stance: Often stands in a highly upright, pot-bellied posture with its legs almost fully stretched.

Plumage: Brown and buff above with dark streaks; the breast is streaked, while the belly and flanks are largely plain white.

Distinct Features: Features a long tail with extensive white on the outer feathers, a thick dark bill, and an elongated hindclaw.
