31-5-2020 POTRIES, VALENCIA - COMMON HEDGE PARSLEY (Torilis arvensis)

Common Hedge Parsley (Torilis arvensis) is an erect, winter or spring annual herb in the carrot family (Apiaceae). Native to Eurasia and introduced to North America, it thrives in disturbed habitats and roadsides. It is notorious for producing bristly, hook-covered seeds (burs) that cling aggressively to animal fur and clothing.

Key Identification & Biology Features

Flowers: Small, 5-petaled white (sometimes pinkish) flowers grouped in flat-topped, umbrella-like clusters called umbels. They bloom from June through September.

Foliage: Triangular, fern-like, 1-2 times pinnately compound leaves covered in fine, pressed white hairs.

Fruits: Green or pinkish seed capsules (3-5 mm) densely coated in hooked prickles, often earning it the nickname "tall sock-destroyer".
