11-6-2020 MONTE CORONA, VALENCIA - DUSKY HEATH BUTTERFLY (Coenonympha dorus)


The Dusky Heath (Coenonympha dorus) is a small butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, commonly found in the western Mediterranean, particularly across Spain, southern France, and parts of central Italy. It thrives in hot, dry, stony scrublands and grassy areas.

Identification & AppearanceWingspan: 16–17 mm (forewing length).

Closed Wings: The underside is cream-coloured or light brown with a distinct silver stripe. It features a prominent black eyespot on the forewing apex, and a series of smaller eyespots on the hindwing.

Open Wings: The males are mostly dark brown with orange hindwings. Females are generally lighter, with reddish-yellow wings that have broad black margins.

Behavior: They are known to rarely open their wings while resting.
