The female Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) is a robin-sized, insectivorous bird measuring 13–15 cm. Unlike the contrasting black-and-grey males, females are entirely smoky grey-brown. Both sexes share a distinctive, bright brick-red tail that they habitually shiver or flick when perched.

Plumage: Plain, uniform grey-brown bodies with no white wing patches, accompanied by a vibrant rufous-orange rump and tail.
Behavior: Highly terrestrial and active, frequently seen bobbing their quivering tails on top of fences, roofs, or rocky outcrops.
Diet: Primarily carnivorous. They forage on the ground, scanning for small invertebrates, spiders, and larvae, but will supplement their diet with berries and seeds in the colder months.
