29-8-2026 MONTE CORONA, VALENCIA - ANTLION (Gymnocnemia variegata)

Gymnocnemia variegata is a rare species of antlion (family Myrmeleontidae) with a Turani-Mediterranean distribution, ranging from Spain to Central Asia.

Main characteristics

Taxonomy: It is the only species belonging to the genus Gymnocnemia.

Appearance: It is a medium-sized insect with a variegated appearance (with alternating spots or colors), characterized by a pattern of ochre and dark brown tones.

Coloration: It has a yellowish-brown body with brown markings and a darker head.

Habitat and rarity: It is a Mediterranean and steppe species that is found very occasionally and sparsely.
