Sand Stock (Malcolmia littorea) is a hardy perennial shrublet of the cabbage family (Brassicaceae). It is famous for its vibrant, star-shaped purple-pink flowers and can be found native to the coastal sand dunes and rocky shores of the western Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts (including Spain, Portugal, France, and North Africa).

Physical Characteristics: Stems grow about 10-40 cm long. Its woody base is covered in ash-white hairs (trichomes). Leaves are elliptical, sometimes dentate, and lean on the stalks.
Flowers: Displays blooms with 4 heart-shaped petals (ranging from lilac-pink to bright purple) and distinct stamens. They give off an amazing, sweet scent.
Habitat: Endemic to harsh, dry, and salty coastal dunes. It plays an important role in fixing sand and stabilizing coastal ecosystems.

Conservation Status: Thrives in hardiness zones 7 to 10. However, due to coastal development and habitat loss, it is considered endangered and highly protected in several areas, such as the dunes of Galicia.
