The Burmese shrike (Lanius collurioides) is a compact, beautifully colored predatory songbird belonging to the shrike family (Laniidae). Like other shrikes, it is often nicknamed the "butcher bird" due to its distinct habit of impaling prey on sharp thorns or barbed wire to store as a "larder".

Key Characteristics

• Appearance: Measuring around 19 to 21 cm, males feature a striking slaty-gray crown, a broad black facial mask, a rich brick-red/rufous-chestnut back, and white underparts. Females are slightly duller, and juveniles exhibit a barred appearance.
