The Eurasian Drone Fly (Eristalis arbustorum), also called the European drone fly or plain-faced dronefly, is a common hoverfly in the family Syrphidae. It mimics honeybee drones for protection, features an aquatic "rat-tailed maggot" larva, and acts as an effective flower pollinator.
Physical Traits & Identification
Size: Adults measure about 9 to 11 millimeters in length.
Face: Features a completely pale-dusted, white-haired face without a central dark stripe.
Body Markings: Abdominal color patterns vary widely depending on the temperature during larval growth, ranging from yellow-banded to almost entirely black.
Bee Mimicry: Looks like a male honeybee (drone), which helps deter predators.
